neva scared.

happy astrological new year? is it just me, or have things been extremely hectic this whole week? this has felt like the longest week on the face of the planet. i understand that we just had a whole equinox + the supermoon (in my moon sign of libra so SHIT) that happened this past week but my goodness…my body is just kaput. a perfect example of such is today: i was not feeling good when i was awakened by my stomach at 4:30 in the morning. my alarm doesn’t go off until 6:55 everyday. now i’m laying there and thankfully, i had some friends to talk to while i’m sitting there in pain, unable to really move. i start the process of trying to get ready for work WAY EARLIER than normal, but since i’m feeling well, it’s just not working. my body is aching and it’s tired. my throat was a little dry and my stomach felt like the circus was having a free-for-all. i also started to get that nauseous feeling that hinders me from moving too much, but i know i want to try and teach some of my classes. there are days where i try and sleep it off and push through, and then there are days where there is just no returning. today was one of those come in a little later, do what i got to do, and dip as soon as i get the green light to go…and i sit here right now in sweats and a hoodie in front of a space heater just trying to stay warm and pray that my migraine goes away. i actually was walking up stairs at work and had to sit on the steps to take a break. this just shows me that my body is trying to gather its strength back in order to function at its best capacity and it needs a little more care, which i know i need to give myself.

but that’s not really what i wanted to talk about – i just wanted to acknowledge how wild this week has been! this week felt like the slowest week in quite some time, and it felt like there was so much going on. since we have stepped into this new season of abundance, there have been so many signs that i have been paying attention to, downloading, and allowing my chakras to help sense out what’s best for me and what is going to help propel me forward. as someone who is breaking the tradition of being a perfectionist (as they’ve always been their whole life), I am beginning to realize the beauty in just ‘being present’ is something that is unmatched. going with your heart and your intuition is what drives us all the time. those things excite us. they make us want to keep pushing. i’ve been doing a lot of work in regards to finding out what those things are and how to live that life of peace regularly. being drained everyday and not in the best way tends to weigh on your shoulders. this is where you figure out how to insert joy into your day your own personal way, and you let that manifest itself as time goes on.

something i was recently pushed to do was do tarot card readings on my IG live (@__sobredosis) in the mornings by a friend.  she told me to stop sleeping on myself and then something clicked for us…

before work, i always pull my own tarot and oracle cards for myself, but i decided to try and kick it up a notch this week doing it on IG live. even though i was extremely nervous at first, i was able to just breathe and show my process for grounding, and find myself through it without being affected as greatly as anticipated. people responded. it hit them. i got lots of positive feedback. and i felt at peace with it also. i’m grateful people gave me a chance, and i’m proud of myself for taking that leap. it made me begin to wonder what else there is at my disposal that i’m letting slide by the wayside way too often? what gifts are laying dormant? which gifts are highly prevalent, but are not being used to their fullest potential? figuring all of that out is part of a beautiful journey that i’m grateful to be a part of and make happen.  i also know that my gifts are made to be shared and i am dedicated to sharing them as time continues on.

the answers always won’t make sense, i’ve come to learn. all a bitch can do is have faith that things are going to be fine and my dreams will come true. the purpose and the path are slightly becoming more and more clear as days go by, and i look forward to what they become in the future. i have also learned to just trust what i know is right. i am the type of person at times that likes to please others for whatever fucking reason – blame it on looking for approval as a child for so long. however, sometimes people don’t have your best interest at heart and learning how to have faith in the decisions that you make that may be ‘unpopular’ is best for you. if we all followed those feelings instead of being worried about what others are going to say about what we are doing…then what’s the point? we are human. it hurts. it stings. but at the same time, it’s a lesson that helps drive you to where you want to go and allows you to make the decision on who and what is right for you.

the best part about it? no one knows the answers to the questions but you.

this is a great time for you to go inward and do some excavating to make room for all the new shit you want. there is abundance waiting on the other side. all it’s waiting for is you to put your bags down and come on over. when you accept the invitation towards your greatness briefcase, your life will change. then, it’s time for you to hit the road running. small steps is all the universe is asking for you. and you’ll evolve along with it. you just need to be open and let that heart chakra receive and that throat chakra expel.

stay encouraged, even when you don’t feel like your mission is hitting the way you want it to. invest in people that will push you to be your best self and vibrate on the same plane you do and hold you down. everyone’s advice isn’t sound advice, and a truly trained intuition knows what’s gucci and what isn’t. there are always going to be snakes in the grass, and it’s your job to pay attention to whom and what you allow yourself to be a part of. trust yourself, and let the Universe guide you the rest of the way.

your job during this time period is to start planning how you want to move in your truth. the time is now for you to move your chess piece and break the ice. are you ready to play the game towards your victory? let’s dive in…because i came ready to play this season.

amen. asé.

Tarot Pull – 8.4.18 | Oshumare/Oxumaré

Before I dive into today’s tarot pull of the day, I would like to explain my process. Every morning before I get up and start my day, I have a routine.

I meditate, I do dice divination (essentially my number(s) of the day), I sage myself, I read from my devotional and another book to practice increasing my spiritual connection, and also do a tarot card pull for the day in order to think about where my energy needs to personally be focused, or how the tarot card can be a guiding light for others as I read and connect it to the meaning.

The deck I currently use to do my pulls is The Tarot of the Orishas, created by Zolrak. I came across this deck when visiting my favorite crystal store in Union Square (Namaste Bookshop), and for some reason, this deck stuck out to me. I’d never worked with tarot cards before, and and growing up Christian, I was always led away from tarot card readings/psychics because I was always told it was the work of the Devil or something that led me further away from God’s grace. As I started to undergo my true spiritual transformation around maybe January or February of 2017, I started to unlearn all of the psychobabble and biases I was given growing up in order to make me feel like I couldn’t receive the signs that the Universe had for me. I’ve always had a connection to the Orishas, ever since my trip to Cuba back in 2013. (Trigger warning: the linked post comes from my Tumblr where I was in a different space and a different time, and the post recounts my time in Cuba, which wasn’t the most heartwarming – feel free to read if you choose).

There was a lot of energy that didn’t make sense at the time going on around me, and during my time in Cuba, I encountered 2 babalawos that allowed me to find another sense of spiritual guidance. A babalawo is essentially what I tell people is the equivalent of a priest in the Catholic religion, to make it plain. I was given a diloggún reading and I had received an eleke from one of the babalawos (basically a necklace that is given to initiates in the Santería religion) even though I hadn’t undergone the official process to become initiated into the religion. I’ve had this eleke ever since my trip back then in 2013, and I feel as though it’s part of the reason why I’m still alive today – the Ancestors and the Orisha have been protecting me and guiding me over the past 5 years. Even going back and skimming through the post that I hyperlinked above brings back so much pain and anguish (hell, that Tumblr page was created when I was a college student, and I haven’t used it since probably 2014 so my whole life was just in a different state then), but was the beginning of me uncovering a lot of my past hurt to bring me to where I am today.

Why all this backstory? I guess because 1) I’m long winded and 2) I needed to ground myself in the reasons as to why I chose this specific deck in Namaste that day. As far as my religious beliefs, don’t ask me what I believe in or what I don’t believe in. Just know that I channel whatever Spirit gives to me and feels is necessary for me to progress in this lifetime. If you wanna talk about my personal beliefs, contact me directly and we can further discuss.

Anyway, back to my daily routine – I began to start to pull cards for myself at the beginning, not knowing what the actual hell I was doing. I was just pulling cards, and reading up on them, getting to know each of the cards and what they meant. This happened back in 2017. At times, I would try readings on my friends, but I felt like I didn’t have the “juice” in order to truly give accurate readings. I soon realized that that was my own judgment of myself and doubt getting in the way, and that when I started to allow the Spirits to course through me so that way I could feel my own energy and pull relevant cards for myself, things started to make sense. I then transitioned into doing readings for close friends just to try it out, and eventually ended up doing it for other acquaintances and strangers, and every reading that I had done hit the spirit of the person I did the reading for.

Daily, I pull a card for myself, and got in the habit of tweeting what my daily pull would be, in hopes that it could be a guiding light for not just myself, but someone else. The pull would primarily be for me, but the sharing aspect of it and the responses I would get from some of my Twitter followers showed me that the cards that I pull don’t necessarily just have to be for my personal journey, but also could resonate with others in the world. My soul purpose is to be a proponent of sharing that gift with others anytime that I can. This brings me to the reason why I’m going to start sharing my pulls on here, and I hope that these pulls can bring you some clarity or make you rethink some things going on in your life.

Here are the basics for my practice: essentially, I’ll show a picture of the card and give the meaning of what the card is, along with a little bit of a background as to what the card means based on what Zolrak writes (if you ever choose to hire me for a tarot reading, you’ll get this done while I channel your energy through my spirit and be able to pull what is best for you, based on your situation). For me, I pull to help myself be grounded for the day, and share what I receive with others. If you feel anything from this post or this pull, feel free to comment. I’ll always give a little bit of background with the card, and explain what the meaning of the card is and how it could affect you in your daily dealings.

Today’s tarot pull is Oshumare (African religion), or Oxumaré (Latin American version), which reflects the spirit of the rainbow. “In the card, we see the shape of a snake (yin, feminine, cold, negative, the mood) and a rainbow (yang, masculine, warm, positive, the sun) a tree under which Oxumaré, in her feminine shape, takes shelter after the rain has stopped, and the sun by her side. The sun’s light passes through water drops and creates a rainbow and its seven colors, painting a daub of enormous beauty in the sky. She was born from the oldest of all mothers of water, representing the union of the sky, the earth, and the water. She therefore meddles with all three, and as already seen, she may take two shapes, two different essences. She has the power of change, transformation, going up and down, confronting and at the same time uniting the opposites, because she comprises both masculine and feminine genders.

Now, I personally want to stop here and say that this snake takes two different essences and has the power of transformation. There may be a situation in your life where you are at a crossroads and are trying to figure out which road to take. However, you have the ability to possess the tools that allow you to partake in whichever side (the masculine or feminine) you want to. The text also states she comprises both masculine and feminine genders, giving her a bit of a bisexuality tip. No, this doesn’t mean that you’re bisexual, but what the energies tell me is that you know what it’s like to transform and switch it up when necessary dependent upon whatever situation you find yourself in. There is enormous beauty in being able to do this, and this should not be taken for granted on today.

“The Earth card in the deck shows a snake going around the globe. A detailed explanation of that symbol as it relates to this card is as follows: The snake biting its own tail means roundness, a circle, the orb, the Earth, and also represents time and eternity, reminding us of cycles, stages, and periods. …a very popular saying is that “every cloud has a silver lining,” and that is very true. After every storm there is ALWAYS a rainbow; there is a permanent coming and going of everything, a continuous happening. We should not forget that Oxumaré is the symbol of transmutation, and the snake is one of the few species that changes its skin.”

Think about the different cycles of life that you may be experiencing right now. I’ll make a personal note here and say that I’ve been in the space of transitioning from one position in my current job to a new one, after a lot of negotiation (and me almost leaving the job until I was offered my current position in which is still TBA as to how it will transpire). I also have been on this spiritual journey to ground myself, and am ever changing because we, as humans, are never meant to stay in the same space and same mentality. Think of this as your opportunity to reflect upon the hope of a new beginning, or a revival of sorts. I know that personally, I am in a space of new beginnings in many endeavors in my life (hey, this website is one of those endeavors), so the timeliness of this card is right on point. ‘This also promotes that thinking is not structural, determinist, or fatalist; on the contrary, one is always looking for a new coming to life, the basis of the theory of reincarnation.’ How are you trying to reincarnate yourself? What are you doing in order to make a change in your life, if you are? How is that manifesting itself? Is it a positive manifestation, or not the manifestation that you expected? Take a step back and think about where you are and whether or not you want to be there.

“The Hindu yogis also speak about a snake which they call “kundalini”, meaning an energy that must rise to higher levels and energize the seven energy centers called chakras. The snake is supposed to sleep in the main or base chakra, located at the base of the spinal cord, and, even in that state, gives vital energy to the individual.”

I’ll give more of a lesson on chakras at a later date, as I do a lot of chakra work personally, but I’ve hyperlinked the basic definition of what they are and why they’re important to keep active. Also, thinking about the root chakra, it deals with the feeling of safety, survival, grounding, support, and foundation for living life. Are you living your best life right now? Do you feel supported and safe? If you aren’t grounding yourself, you may feel like your head is in the clouds and that you have no sense of safety. This could mean that your root chakra is underdeveloped, and you need to do some work to refocus yourself on what your soul purpose is. But Oxumaré shows that you have the ability to transform into what you see yourself being.

The meaning of this card overall allows you to welcome wealth, abundance, material pleasures, favorable changes, and transmutation into your life. Short trips may arise (in time or distance) and your business will thrive. There will be a lot of subtle moves in your day, a bit of diplomacy in your dealings, and you may have some sort of political debate today (not just politics in the terms you’re thinking of them – think another scale as far as conflict with having your power and others trying to take away from it if you don’t ground yourself properly). If you’re someone who is competent in the field of oral, written or visual communications, today is a great day for you to get out there and do something productive. You will be a great leader of groups, conventions, or the masses, and will know how to charm with your looks, hands, voice or speech, making you a grandiloquent person on today.

You have the ability to be versatile, but since it is a dual changing card, dependent upon what your energy is giving and where you are in life today, it could mean a loss of investments made and unfavorable changes, too much quiet and stagnation, or projects you have been working on come to a sudden end. You may be impulsive today if you’re not grounded properly, so make sure that you think through all your actions today and find that balance. You’re ever changing, so if you fuck up today, it’s totally fine. Just remember how to bring yourself back down to Earth, and do what’s necessary for you to push forward and grow along the path that you see fit.

The reading ends with a quote from André Maurois, a French author, that states:

“He who mainly compares his lot with that of others less fortunate, knows how to live.”

I interpret this as being grateful for what you do have and how you can bring more beneficial greatness into your space. We tend to compare ourselves to others that are thriving more than us, but it’s important to be grateful for where you are, and where you can be if you are more intentional in your work. I could be wrong, but that’s what my personal interpretation of the quote is. You’re forever changing, and you inhabit so many different spaces that you don’t even realize at times, but as long as you continue to remember that you have the ability to change and shed the skin of your past and manifest what you want to see in your life to help balance you out, you’ll always be good.

I hope today’s reading spoke to you. Leave comments below if necessary, and I hope that today, you find that balance, as well as shed that old shit and step into your new form. If you are, good for you. If you aren’t, take some time to figure out what you need in order to be the true blue you. Shed what doesn’t serve you anymore on today, and step into the rainbow and see the light after the storm.

Amen. Asé.
